Twentieth Century Modernisms in Balinese Wood Carvings
'The Becker Collection - Twentieth century modernisms in Balinese wood carving' contains the private collection of twentieth century ?modern style? Balinese wood carvings, collected by Ton and Mies Becker, both retired medical specialists and collectors of Asian art. Between the 8th and 10th century Hindu influences spread to Bali and blended into the exiting Balinese mix of animistic and Buddhist styles and subjects, known as Bali Aga. Hence, in due time the craftsmen obtained the subjects for their works from the Hindu-Balinese religion and their heroes and demons from famous Hindu epics. This particular style became known in the Western art world as the ?Traditional or Old Balinese style?. In the 20th century the arts and crafts scene in Bali changed completely. First because of Western artist who visited Bali and stayed on to work there and, second, because of the gradual influx of increasing numbers of foreign tourists. In addition the Dutch colonial government started a military campaign to control the powerful kingdoms of central and southern Bali. As a result the local craftsmen lost their royal support and soon realized that foreign tourists were not particularly interested in gods and heroes. Hence, stimulated by some of the Western artists who had settled in Bali, they turned to secular subjects taken from nature and everyday life and became more impressionistic in the execution. This led to a range of new styles, often impressionistic and sometimes even minimalistic and caricatural with bizarre elongated shapes or solid compact forms. In this book we are concerned with this particular type of 20th century ?Modern Style? Balinese wood carving. The catalogue contains 40 objects of ?modern style? wood carving, representing different styles. Each object is photographed, both as an overview and in details if so requested. A brief description of each object is provided, together with the estimated date, and additional information is provided if considered useful. The catalogue is preceded by an essay on the history of Balinese wood carving.kunst
Baule Monkeys
Straying from the traditional art canon of the delicate Baule masks and figures, Baule monkeys explores the darker side of this art form, in all its aspects. This makes it the first book to deal exclusively with the eponymous sculptures. These awe-inspiring bowl-bearing figures were physical manifestations of invisible powers, both malign and benign, and served their communities through the mediation of diviners. Using a group of remarkable figures from the Africarium collection as illustration, the book focuses on the creation, usage and form of these bowl bearers and sheds light on the cultural and ritual context in which they operated. Through extensive research, the book combines new and fascinating discoveries with all previous relations on the subject. This research is accompanied by many splendid images. Not only does the book include an original map and never before published field photos, it also contains 15 objects from the Africarium collection and 40 monkey figures from other public and private collections represented in full-page illustrations, and in smaller formats. Ellen Thorbecke – From Peking to Paris
'Ellen Thorbecke ? From Peking to Paris' tells the impressive life story of Ellen Thorbecke (1902?1973), a photographer who holds a special place in the history of international photography. In this richly illustrated book, her oeuvre is presented through the cities and regions where she lived and worked: Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Paris, and the Middle East. Thorbecke left for China in 1931, where she purchased her first camera. Originally trained as a journalist, she developed into a discerning photographer with a distinctly engaged gaze. Her lively, often spontaneous street photography depicts daily life with great attention to human interaction and vitality. Her photographs were accompanied by personal observations and formed the basis for influential publications such as Peking Studies (1934) and People in China (1935). The book offers a rare and intimate snapshot of the 1930s and 1940s. Thorbecke's work is distinguished by her direct, human, and unbiased way of looking, making her images relevant even today. Her compact yet extraordinary archive, housed at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in 2008, consists of 638 black-and-white negatives, 166 of which were made in China. It is considered one of the gems of the museum collection. This publication appears on the occasion of the exhibition 'Ellen Thorbecke's China' at the Nederlands Fotomuseum and is the first monograph in an ongoing series about the museum's collection.kunst
