Robert Indiana (1928-2018) was an American artist associated with the Pop Art movement. The American dream, the promise of freedom, happiness and material affluence is the basis of his creative work. Indiana’s eye-catching sign paintings are among the most radical expressions of Pop Art and take up the aesthetics of advertising and consumerism, building bold icons from numbers, letters and forms. This publication presents Indiana’s classic work in its full breadth on the basis of selected examples and provides evidence of the shining significance and enormous presence of his most famous work, ?Love?, in his oeuvre.

The Architecture of Hospitals
Architecture affects people. The architecture of hospitals contributes to the well-being and recovery of patients. This bold proposition dates back to the late 18th century, and has been a recurring theme in the functional development of hospital architecture ever since. The most recent manifestation of this was the phenomenon of 'Evidence-Based Design', which originated in the USA. This methodology compares the effects of various spatial factors and provided indisputable evidence that architecture does indeed work for the first time. The positive influence of architecture is one of the two cornerstones of 'The Architecture of Hospitals'. The other is architecture as an historical discipline with a wide-ranging cultural dimension. The hospital, being a public and representative building with a special societal function, is the ideal vehicle to express this cultural dimension.kunst

Building The Rotterdam
De Rotterdam is a unique multifunctional building on the banks of the river De Maas. Covering an area of 160,000 m2 it is a masterpiece in the oeuvre of architect Rem Koolhaas and his firm OMA and an absolute eye-catcher in Rotterdam. Because of the many functions it can truly be called a 'vertical city'. Photographer Ruud Sies followed the building of the Rotterdam from 2009, when the first shovel went into the ground, until the completion in 2013. The building and construction show the creativity and commitment of many people, revealing a vision for urban life in the 21st century and advances in technology.kunst

Matisse to Malevich
For the exhibition 'Matisse to Malevich. Pioneers of modern art' from the Hermitage some 75 paintings have been selected from one of the world's finest collections of French painting from the early twentieth century: that of the Hermitage in St Petersburg. Matisse, Picasso and Derain receive special attention, as do Fauvists like Van Dongen and De Vlaminck and their outstanding works in this collection. One of the articles focuses on Kandinsky and Malevich. The exhibition and the catalogue chart the origins of Modernism as an art-historical movement, and the artists' inspiration when they initiated a revolution in art at the beginning of the last century.kunst
